Making the decision to volunteer 27 months of your life in the Peace Corps can feel overwhelming at times because you don’t really know what you are getting yourself into. I know exactly how you feel. A million questions ran through my head when I was sent my invitation.
What is life like down there?
What does a typical day look like for a education volunteer in the Peace Corps?
What do I pack? Only two suitcases… WHAT?
How can I make an impact?
The list could go on for hours, so I goggled everything I could possibly think of, but ended up, being a little discouraged that there wasn’t more information on the topic (besides the pc website) for the Eastern Caribbean.
The Eastern Caribbean is the only post in all of Peace Corps that incorporates 4 DIFFERENT islands (Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Grenada) which means you commit to service and actually have no idea what island/ country you’ll be spending the next two years on. It’s exciting, it’s nerve wracking, but the team has a way of placing you where you’re needed.
I knew I wanted to create more content to help ease the process of deciding, packing, and preparing for an amazing experience in the Peace Corps Eastern Caribbean. So right away, I became friends with a fellow trainee, Katie Anderson, and she had the same vision. It’s beautiful how God places people in your life exactly when you need them and we were lucky that our host families were neighbors, and that’s how this collaboration and partnership was born.
So after a few weeks of getting our ducks in a row, the Thoughtful Blonde x Kat’s Eye View Interview Project was born. I will volunteering in St. Andrew’s, Grenada and Katie will be in Dennery, St. Lucia, so we will be conducting some in person on our own islands and some via skype/ facetime.
We will be covering topics of education, training, typical life, advice, achievements, packing tips, budgeting on a stipend, obstacles, and much more.
